How to pack Fragile Items for Moving House
If you’re moving house soon then one of your top priorities on your list will be to pack. But, unless it’s something that you’ve done before, you might not know how to do it efficiently. So, how do you pack fragile items when moving house.
First off, make sure you have all the essential packing materials:
- Packing tape
- Corrugated cardboard
- Strong cardboard boxes to transport goods in
- Markers and labels to mark and identify boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Packing Peanuts
- Bungee cords or rope to hold packaging in place
Protecting your fragile items when moving house all starts with how you pack them. Extra care should be taken when it comes to the tools and techniques you use.
It is possible to move the most fragile of items without any damage as long as you put extra effort and attention into packing them correctly.
How do you pack fragile items when moving house?
1. Use Strong Cardboard Boxes
It’s not just about how strong the box is but there is a nuance to packing.
Bigger heavy items should be on the bottom and small heavy items can be in their own smaller box as they are easier to get a grip of and carry on their own.
Boxes don’t need to be full to the brim. Allowing for some space between items is good because you can then use paper, packing peanuts, and bubble wrap to cushion and protect your items during transit.
2. Get Dividers for Glasses and Bottles
Cardboard dividers are perfect for protecting your glasses, stemware and even alcoholic beverages in their bottles. These prevent items from moving around and colliding with each other, which can protect them from damage, plus dividers can help maximise the space available in a box by creating individual “cells”.
3. Wrap Each Individual Item
Everything from glasses and plates to fragile decorative items should be individually wrapped based on the size, shape, and material. Remove any loose pieces, like lids, and wrap them separately.
The most delicate items, such as china, should be wrapped in bubble wrap and secured with tape paying close attention to any handles. Also, separate these items into smaller boxes on their own rather than stacking them with too many other items.
4. Carefully Fill Each Box
Packing is a fine art and knowing how to pack delicate items for storage is an even finer art. Simply throwing bits and pieces into a box isn’t packing; placing items carefully and purposefully is packing.
5. Clearly Label Your Box
Once sealed, make sure your box clearly states that the contents are FRAGILE. Make this clear with “fragile” tape or label the box clearly to prevent careless dropping or moving. Indicating which way the box should be carried and moved is also a good idea.
6. Take care with larger items
When it comes to other rooms and fragile items, using the original box that your kitchen appliances or TV came in are a great way to ensure your items will travel safely (if you’ve kept them).
Other items include lamps: Dismantle the bulb and shade from the lampstand and wrap the stand in bubble wrap. Place the stand in a box and fill up the space around it. Encase the bulb and shade in bubble wrap and store them separately.
Mirrors are another tricky item to pack: Start by taping up the face of the mirror; simply add packing or electrical tape onto the face of the mirror.
This tape will help absorb any vibrations and help to prevent breakage. Add protectors to the corners for added piece of mind, and then wrap the entire mirror in bubble wrap. Place fragile tape or stickers on the front and back of the mirror to alert removalists to be extra careful.
Vases: Similar to packing glasses, make sure you fill the inside of the vase with bubble wrap or newspaper, before wrapping the entire item in bubble wrap and fragile tape. Depending on its size, it can be placed into its own box or with other fragile items.
7. Hire a Moving Company
Consider hiring a local moving company to help you pack and move your fragile items. Professional moving companies will know how to expertly move items with care, especially fragile items like TVs and antique furniture.
